What’s the purpose of staying young? Well, there are a lot of positive aspects and you are probably aware of most of them already. Staying young is something that is very much under discussion nowadays with millions being spent on researching the causes of ageing and any possible ways of slowing the process or even preventing it altogether. You may also be aware of some internal differences but of course you won’t be able to see them. When you age, it affects every tissue and cell in your body. These internal and therefore invisible changes will eventually make their presence felt.

Fat may make an unwelcome appearance on various parts of your body, such as your waistline, belly and hips. This is all too visible. But what about the hidden areas,where fat is also found, often in large amounts, among the tissues and around the vital organs? These fatty deposits are the cause of much disease in ageing bodies.

The cell membranes lose their ability to retain oxygen and start releasing carbon dioxide. This is known as Oxidisation and is destructive of healthy cells in your body in the same way that rust is destructive of the metal in your car’s body. Because of this, your organs slowly start losing cells and your body doesn’t function like it used to. Your bones, muscles and skin begin to get stiff.Since there are so many cells in your body you probably won’t recognize that large numbers are constantly being lost until noticeable damage has been done and you become aware that your body’s ability to function is somehow weakened.

When cells disappear, your organs start acting differently. Some people can start ageing in this respect as early as 40 or 50 years old. When you age, your blood circulation is affected. There’s the possibility of you losing your memory slowly. You could also suffer from other health problems related to this. Even so, you may not notice a really significant difference until you get more advanced in age.
Stress can play a major part in ageing. The strain exerted on your mind and your body can actually speed up the process. You’re missing out on the chance to feel free. Instead, you’re allowing your body to take in all of the cares and pressures that you cannot possibly solve by yourself.

If you are exposed to toxins in the environment, they can easily affect your body in an adverse way.

You should engage yourself in some form of movement, whether it’s exercising or a hobby.Staying active is a constructive way to make use of your time. It can also make you feel useful, take your mind off your worries and give you something to strive for. It could be something that pertains to a definite goal or just something to pass the time away.

If you have a hobby you enjoy, it can certainly keep you busy. You probably have talents that you take for granted and do not appreciate fully. For instance, you may be able to crochet or knit a sweater within a few days while it takes others weeks to complete. Even if you do not want to make something for yourself, your creative gifts can be put to good use for others in the way of presents, or for fund-raising for a charity. Whatever the reason they will always be welcomed.

Perhaps you have some under-used artistic talents such as drawing, painting, photography, pottery or sculpture or maybe you’d like to have a go at something new. Many arts and crafts can be practised at home, of course, but most areas also have groups which come together to develop their skills, receive instruction and training and, as a great by-product, make new friends. Often these groups mount exhibitions of their achievements which can give you a great boost of confidence.

You may have ‘green thumbs’ and produce fruit, flowers and vegetables that your neighbours could never grow. Gardening is an excellent anti-ageing hobby, helping you keep fit in both body and mind. It gets you out in the fresh air most of the year and makes you physically active, which boosts the immune system big style. Gardening has proven mental-health benefits also. It needs you to be looking ahead and planning the future rather than being stuck in the past. Even if you live in a high rise apartment or only have a tiny backyard you can find the joy of growing things (and learn to cope with frustration and disappointment if they occasionally fail!) You can grow all kinds of plants indoors, in window boxes or on a small balcony, even some that will provide a crop. Any yard can be improved with pots and tubs of greenery, blossom and a little fruit and veg. You might find that you get interested in cultivating unusual or exotic plants. This can be a ver absorbing hobby and is certain to intrigue your friends! Staying active is important for you.

Another bonus is that many older people find that their hobby can provide them with some extra income, if they can find outlets for their goods in their locality and this can certainly take their mind off ageing!

Or you could have a gift for music where you didn’t even take one music lesson. How marvellous to have the time to practise an instrument or to re-hone your singing voice. You could surprise yourself and others with how good you get!
Joining a choir would be a great way to get you out of the house, enjoy your musicality, train your voice and make friends. If you take part in singing festivals and competitions you have the excitement of a shared goal and, maybe, the thrill of winning. You certainly won’t feel old anymore!

Whatever your hobby is, make use of it for your own well being. In this way you can have a connection with your inner self and gain a lot of satisfaction.

 

Physical Exercise and Staying Active

If you haven’t exercised in a while, now is a good time to start. Being overweight or obese is one of the main causes that people age quickly. Too many people prefer to live the sedentary lifestyle and not get enough movement in their life.
Staying young includes being fit and in shape. Being overweight or obese is a worrying issue for many people and, if not corrected, can cause serious or even life-threatening health problems to develop. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine will not only help you take off the weight, but you’ll also feel better about yourself as you get to look good.

If you choose not to become active with exercise, you become less robust. Your body gradually starts to slow down and then your ability to move around becomes limited.

Your joints can become stiff and prone to injuries. You can also lose your sense of balance with a lack of exercise. As you get older, these issues will become more severe, especially if you decide to remain inactive.

For instance, if you have a hip injury from a fall, it could have resulted from lack of balance. In addition to that, you would have lacked strength and endurance in your body to be able to save yourself from falling. Tai Ch’i is an excellent method of regaining our normal sense of balance and is a regime much favoured by older people. The practise of Yoga can also greatly improve balance. When followed faithfully for a while these exercises can provide mental benefits also, by way of inducing calmness, the result of a proper acceptance of life’s inevitable changes.

It’s never too late to start a fitness regime. If you haven’t started, don’t waste any more time. You need willpower to make a fresh start, even if it’s for only 10 minutes a day. It won’t take a long time for you to see results however, then you’ll be glad you took the trouble.

You have to adopt a disciplined mind-set to begin exercising or any other new activity but once you start, your body will soon begin to feel the benefits. As long as you do it on a consistent basis, you will gain more physical strength and become noticeably more flexible.

It’s important for older people to engage in workouts such as cardiovascular training, strength training and exercises that will help their body to stay flexible. These workouts will help them to stay in shape and provide them with the physical boost they need.

Before you start, you need to determine what kind of workout routine you want to do. There are different things that you can do to keep your youth. Exercise has been proven to increase the quality of life for older adults. It can certainly provide a way of hindering the ageing process.

A lack of exercise can cause all sorts of health issues. If you get stagnant and don’t engage in any physical activity, you could find yourself developing heart problems or osteoporosis (brittle bone disease caused by a lack of calcium plus insufficient exercise).
Osteoporosis would result in an even greater lack of mobility, plus considerable pain. Exercising regularly is highly recommended to prevent this debilitating condition.

Also, if you exercised on a daily, or regular, basis, your blood pressure and cholesterol level would both stabilize.
It would also greatly reduce the chance of you getting diabetes.

You could start out with 15 minutes of aerobic exercise. Then work your way up to 30 minutes, continuing in 15 minute intervals until you get to an hour. You should do cardio workouts at least 3 to 5 times a week.
It is not recommended to start out doing an hour’s worth of exercises if you haven’t exercised in a while. Start slowly and gradually increase the time and the pace.

Another way to get involved with exercise is to join a health club. They have plenty of machines such as ellipticals, stationary bikes and treadmills. Health clubs have trainers that can work with you in getting an exercise routine together.

If a health club is out of your financial reach, you may want to try a YMCA in your area (if there’s one nearby). They have classes available for health and fitness for a minimal charge.

Or if that’s not for you, you can always go walking in your neighborhood or at a local park. You can start by walking for about 15 minutes until you can push it to 30 minutes and then some more. If you need some motivation to get you started, get a dog!

You can walk at your own pace and not feel rushed. However, you will eventually want to pick up the pace at some point as you get more energy.

A great way to get in shape is with water aerobics. This exercise can help your joints and muscles. This exercise can also be a lot of fun.

In addition to the above, it’s a good idea to get in some strength training as part of your exercise routine. In your strength training, you should include weight lifting as part of your workout.

Some people think that weightlifting is not safe for older adults, but that is far from the truth. Weightlifting helps older adults gain additional strength, bone density and balance.

Studies have shown that women between the ages of 50 and 70 years old that engaged in strength training gained more bone density in their hips and spine.

The group that refrained from weightlifting lost twice as much bone density as opposed to those that included weightlifting in their workouts. The more weightlifting they included, the more strength they gained. Of course, with that, their activity level increased.

It is important that you try to exercise all of your muscle groups as least twice a week. It’s better if you start with light weights in order to get accustomed to working with weights in general.

You can start by doing a few repetitions at a time until you get familiar with those. Then you can move on to heavier weights. As you do that, you must increase the repetitions and the weights themselves.

Make sure that when you lift weights it doesn’t pose a danger to your body. If you have to stick with lighter weights for a longer period, then it’s better to do so than risk incurring an injury.

Exercising is beneficial to everyone, whether they’re young or old. Remember that any type of physical exercise is better than none. Keep in mind that exercise is a good weapon to ward off many health problems and that it is as good for your mind as it is for your body!

You will continue to be stuck in the same place if you are a constant complainer. The energy you could be using to change the things you don’t like is wasted in moaning about it. Every time you complain, you take away a moment of happiness and fulfilment that you could have. Plus, other people don’t care to be around chronic complainers.
